A record book (1859) includes law examination questions from the University of Virginia, French language notes, and cash entries made at a later date for such items as beef, medicine, toll charges, carriage repair, and rental of slaves. Also recorded are credits for the sale of fodder and for mules impressed. An official record book of Company H of the 26th Louisiana Infantry Regiment contains Captain William A. Bisland's morning reports and monthly remarks (Apr. 1862-July 1863) giving information concerning officers and soldiers at roll call, company movements and Federal activities, illnesses, deaths, and discharges. Entries (1863-1865) record clothing issued; and payments made by individuals for clothing. The volume includes the following lists: names (1863-1865) of privates and non-commissioned officers with their physical descriptions, places of birth, occupations, enlistment information, payments, and bounties; names of 139 officers and soldiers (1862-1865) showing ranks and service records; names of company members paroled at Vicksburg (July 7, 1863) or left as prisoners of war; discharges (1862-1863) due to death, desertion, or transfer; names of men killed and wounded during the seige of Vicksburg (May-June 1863); and ordnance stores and supplies. The volume includes copies of circulars by General M. L. Smith and Colonel R. Richardson, and a special order of E. Kirby Smith.

Lewis Guion, the son of a sugar planter, was a jurist of Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. He studied law at the University of Virginia and practiced law in Thibodaux and New Orleans, Louisiana. On March 12, 1862, Guion enlisted as an officer in Company H of the 26th Louisiana Infantry Regiment under the leadership of Colonel Duncan S. Cage.
